The Smithsonian Libraries collaborates with research and curatorial staff from the Smithsonian Institution’s 20 museums and nine research centers to ensure the preservation of this legacy and to provide world-wide access to this intellectual output.

As a discovery tool for Smithsonian Research, SRO has two primary components: a bibliography of publication citations and a repository of full online editions. Researchers and scholars affiliated with the Smithsonian are encouraged to contribute to SRO, which currently collects around 2,500 citations for the bibliography each year. Staff contributors have also provided over 20,000 full text electronic versions of their publication in the repository.

SRO is more than just an official record, it is also used by Smithsonian departments to highlight staff publications. Several Smithsonian museums and research centers have created web pages for their staff with links to their SRO publications, where full editions are instantly available. Additionally, SRO contributes its data to the Smithsonian Dashboard and Collections Search Center.

The Smithsonian Libraries is proud to facilitate scholarly discovery through Smithsonian Research Online.
